Module 3 - Build a Prototype or Pilot the Network Structure
Section 1 - Build the Prototype or Pilot
CareTaker Publications: Solution
Mr. Smith of CareTaker Publications has accepted your recommendations but
has made it clear that both the parent corporations and CareTakers management
have repeatedly expressed the requirement that everything will work before
the move takes place.
1. Describe how you will pilot the system prior
to the move. You need not worry about the mainframe and
the SNA traffic; that
will be the parent corporations Network Operations personnels responsibility.
-
Because the network will be installed in a new building, we would propose
that the new communication lines be installed between the three locations
in parallel with the existing lines.
-
One of the new servers would be used as a test server. The server would
be placed on a 100-Mbps port of the switch.
-
A minimum of one PC would be attached to each LAN segment in the new building.
This attachment should be done in the computer room at the Catalyst 5000
switch to eliminate cable issues that are not the responsibility of the
internetwork design. A single PC at the warehouse would be connected to
the Cisco 2503 router. All circuits and paths would then be tested.
2. If applicable, here are some additional recommendations:
-
Test the design. Make sure you can meet Mr. Smith's stated response-time
requirement (that is, users should see their screens within one tenth of
a second.)
-
Investigate what competitors will be proposing.
-
Write a demonstration script of the test results. Make sure the tests will
prove that the design meets Mr. Smith's needs, and emphasize Cisco's strengths.
-
Practice the demonstration.
-
Schedule time with Mr. Smith and show him the demonstration.
