Module 2 - Design the Network Structure
Section 1 - Design the Topology
CareTaker Publications: Solution
1. On a separate sheet of paper draw a topology
that will meet CareTakers requirements. Include only the
high-level view of the
location of links and internetworking devices. In a few sentences, describe
how
your topology meets CareTakers
needs.
-
Within the new facilities, the entire internetwork can be configured and
tested without interruption to the existing operations. The router link
to HI will be configured and tested prior to any move. HI's network operations
personnel will be able to simulate SNA traffic while TCP/IP traffic is
shared on the link (pings, traces, and e-mail could be used for this purpose).
2. After putting your initial topology together,
the IS manager has brought up the question of failures.
She feels that it is very
important that the warehouse not lose access to the mainframe and its server.
As a response to your
question about the economic trade-offs, she stated that management probably
would not accept any kind
of fail-safe or redundancy that increases the cost more than 2 to 5 percent.
What modification, if
any, would you make to your design to accommodate fail-safe operations
of the
warehouse?
-
Consider locating the distribution server at the warehouse.
-
Consider an additional lower-speed leased line connection between the parent
companys router and the warehouse.
-
Consider a redundant leased line supplied by a different provider with
a different central office, or a standby ISDN connection between the warehouse
and the Cisco router.
